Crystal sugar
On behalf of aroma and taste - series on the purchasing philosophy at Felchlin - crystal sugar
In this part of our series, we report on crystal sugar. Approximately 2,000 tons of crystal sugar are processed at Felchlin each year and this correlates to around 70% of the entire sugar that we process. We use Swiss sugar as a matter of course because it is considerably more sustainable than sugar from the EU for instance.
Sugar beet thrives optimally in Swiss soil and when it is harvested each individual beet consists of up to 20% sugar. The rest is used in sustainable sugar production to produce valuable raw materials, for example, animal feed, biogas and natural fertilisers. There is no waste and therefore the comprehensive utilisation of Swiss sugar beet makes a significant contribution to the exceptional ecological balance of Swiss sugar. This also incorporates superior energy efficiency and the consistent recycling of waste heat and waste water treatment during sugar production.
